Strategies to Catch up on Notes
Every therapist will get behind on notes. Plan accordingly.
Complete current notes first. Always put the last (most recent) session first. Don’t add to your behind pile by not keeping up with today’s sessions.
Continue working backwards from most recent to furthest out.
Think about how your memory works, will it be easier to recall if you go by the schedule of the day or can you recall the order of events patient to patient-choose which one works for you. Ie: starting from the most recent either go by calendar date or patient and work backwards creating the notes.
Make sure to document that it is late entry, this is required by many insurances.
Control the urge to write lots of details, note what you remember and stick to the basics (check this blog out for basics), getting the note completed is the most important.
If you don’t remember, don’t add in the information.
Remember late entries happen, mistakes are made, just do your best and create better systems going forward.
